CO3 interview Alicia Toal, winner of the 2017 Leading for Impact Award, to find out what winning the Award meant to her

We interview Alicia Toal, winner of the 2017 Leading for Impact Award, to find out what winning the Award meant to her

1. What did winning the Leading for Impact Award mean to you?

I was absolutely thrilled to win the award.  Personally it was rewarding to receive such an endorsement/validation of the work we do at VOYPIC.  Whilst we all value our own work, it is really heart-warming and motivating to know that others see the value in it too.

2. As part of your prize you had the opportunity to participate in a 3 day leadership exchange to Stockholm –

  • What did you learn?
  • What was the highlight?

Where do I start?  I got so much from the exchange visit.    It was really interesting to hear about the development and history of civic engagement and community development in Sweden, which remains strong today.  And whilst it’s very different from our own history here in Northern Ireland there are many powerful lessons to learn from their experience.

A highlight for me was meeting some of the members of the Swedish Association of Tenants, one of several national movements.  Its people who affect change – not organisations. It’s the Swedish way, don’t you know?

3. The 2018 Leadership Awards are now open.  What would you say to anyone that is considering nominating their peer/work colleague?

Sometimes in the sector we get so caught up in doing our work that we forget to take stock of what we do and how well we do it.  It’s important to celebrate our people especially in challenging times like these.  So I would say ‘do it’; make that nomination, be proud, stand tall.  Of course not everyone can win but the ceremony itself is a positive celebratory event for everyone in this vibrant third sector.

The 2018 Leadership Awards are open for Nomination until Friday 17 November!
