Getting GDPR-Ready

Getting GDPR-Ready
Friday, October 20, 2017 - 08:00 to 09:45
Legal Island, 5 Steeple Rd, Antrim, BT41 1BH

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25th May 2018. It is the biggest thing in data protection in decades. It’s probably the biggest risk to your organisation – breaches of the GDPR, particularly involving the kind of sensitive personal information we often hold in the third sector, could lead to fines of up to €20m from 25th May 2018.

In essence, the GDPR is designed to bring controls on how organisations process personal data into line with 21st century developments, like social media, internet sales, mobile data and the cloud.

It will impact on how you process information through your website, how you respond to subject access requests, your employment contracts and your relationships with external organisations that process personal data on your behalf. It will impact on your fundraising abilities – will the information you currently hold on supporters be held lawfully after May 2018?

And just to encourage you to take the data protection laws seriously, the GDPR provides data protection authorities like our Information Commissioner’s Office with the power to impose fines of €20m (and possibly more for really big organisations).

The GDPR will be incorporated into domestic law in every EU Member State, including the UK, regardless of Brexit. You will have less than a year to get your house in order. In data protection terms, that’s really not very long at all.

Anna Flanagan, Solicitor, Pinsent Masons LLP, and Scott Alexander from Legal-Island will help you to get ahead of the game and protect your organisation against the obvious risks. In this breakfast seminar on 20th October, Scott will interview Anna about key developments and what practical steps you and your organisation can take now to minimise your risks arising out of the GDPR and the data protection changes.

You will also have time to ask Anna questions about the GDPR and any data protection concerns you might have.

The seminar will start with breakfast and networking at 8.00 am at Legal-Island’s training centre at Steeple Road, Antrim, and the interview itself will begin at 8.30. We anticipate the session will finish by 9.45 am at the latest.

Topics covered include:

  • Risk Assessment and Best Practice
