Governance as Leadership - What are the essential elements of an effective Charity Chair?

CO3 in partnership with Brendan Mullan of Virtus Consultancy are designing a learning and development programme specifically for Charity Chairs.

In order to develop a programme that is both relevant and topical, we would like to invite you to a workshop on Thursday 7 April, 5.00pm – 7.00pm,  where we will be inviting Chairs to share with us what they feel are the issues and subjects that they face in their role as Chairperson on a Third Sector board.


Why invest in specific training for a Chair?

The Chairperson is responsible for leading the board and setting the tone for all its members. They oversee governance and policy setting, with a focus on mission, direction, priorities and evaluation.  The relationship the Chair has with both the Trustees and with the Chief Officer is pivotal.  The Chairperson’s role is fundamental to the success of a charity.  Given the weight of responsibility that sits on the Chair, we are designing a learning and development programme specifically looking at the roles and responsibilities of the Board Chair.   We want to develop a high impact low cost programme that is co-designed with current Charity Chairs and CEOs.    

The value of learning and development for Chairs is based on the recognition that a leaderless board is likely to be less effective over the long term, particularly so in difficult timesTherefore, we are inviting you to a workshop to explore the particular issues and subjects that you feel would be relevant to include and explore as part of a leadership programme designed for the Charity Chairperson.  We are also planning to hold a separate session with Chief Executives, asking them what are the essential elements of an effective Chair  - Chief Executive relationship, which will also feed into the learning and development programme.  We would value your input and hope that you are able to make it to the workshop being held on:
