There’s an Elephant in the Boardroom
How does your Board handle conflict?
Are you a trustee whose board has been faced with some form of conflict? If so, you’re not alone – it’s far more common that you think. A 2014 survey entitled ‘Conflicts in the Boardroom’ reported:
- 29% of board members have experienced a boardroom dispute so serious as to affect the survival of the organisation
- 43% said conflict affected the level of trust amongst board members
- 67% were currently involved in unresolved board disputes
The most common cause of conflict was reported to be disagreement about financial and strategic decisions but what was more surprising was that the second most common cause was the behaviour and attitudes of board members.
In this Trustee Network event Dorcas Crawford, Senior Partner in Edwards & Co and founder of The Better Way will conduct a workshop on taking a proactive approach to conflict in the boardroom. Using role play and audience participation she will highlight common areas of dispute and demonstrate some of the skills that can be used to detect and prevent conflict from reaching the level where it affects the organisation’s functioning and survival.
