Leading Governance - A Brand New Programme of Workshops for Chairs and Chief Executives in the Third Sector

Introduction

Increasingly, CO3 members are realising that ‘rules are not enough’. The challenges of governing a charity in the modern world demand really effective leadership. This leadership has to come at Board and Executive levels, and it requires good relationships between levels if the organisation is to function well.

We have developed a series of workshops to support Chairs and Chief Executives as they juggle with the competing demands of stakeholders. Our intention is to provide a safe space for them to:

  • Take time out to think together and learn together

  • Share experiences with other colleagues in the sector

  • Develop clear governance action plans, with Board development to the fore

A series of 6 twilight workshops, each of 2.5 hours (5:00pm – 7:30pm)

1. TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:

  • What makes an effective leader – in the context of the Chair & CEO?

  • Inspiring vision and strategy – what does great governance look like?

  • Developing an effective Board – structures, processes, relationships and risks

  • Reviewing effectiveness at Board and CEO level

  • Managing personalities, and using conflict as a constructive force

  • Finding and developing future leaders.

2. FOCUS ON LEADING

The programme will introduce the principles of good governance. The focus will be on the leadership competencies required to achieve excellence in practice.

Our series of six 2.5-hour “twilight” workshop sessions will use a blend of action learning techniques including presentations, case studies, self-assessment exercises and group work. Participants will be encouraged and supported to put their learning into practice between sessions. Participants will have access to online learning resources.

The six 2.5-hour workshops will cover the following subject areas:

  • The board's distinctive role

  • Leading beyond authority

  • Clarity of purpose and direction

  • Developing inspiring relationships

  • Performance conversations

  • Our future as a board

Outcomes

By the end of this programme, participants will have had the opportunity to develop a comprehensive plan to enhance their leadership, management and governance competency in the context of a Board of Directors with a focus on the leadership role of the Chair and Chief Executive. As a result of participating in the programme each participant will be closer to achieving his or her full potential as a Director and member of a Board or as a Chief Officer supporting and serving a Board.

About the Facilitators

Joy Allen

Joy Allen, a Chartered Director, is the sole director of Focus on Governance Ltd, and a specialist in charity governance. In recent years she has undertaken Governance Review and Development Processes in over 20 charities in Belfast, Dublin, Cork and Limerick. Each of those has included development of a tailored Governance Action Plan and Governance Manual. Ricky O'Rawe

Richard O’Rawe is an experienced facilitator and a leadership specialist. He is Managing Director of Stellar Leadership, a company offering advice and support in the areas of leadership, governance, strategy formulation and organisational design. He has an MSc in Executive Leadership. In 2011 he was awarded an ILM Level 7 Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching. He has held directorships in a range of private, public and charitable companies and is currently Chair of the Belfast Metropolitan College under ministerial appointment. Majella McCloskey

Majella McCloskey has a BA in Politics from Queens University Belfast and an MSc in Executive Leadership from the University of Ulster.
Majella has been Chief Executive of CO3 since 2005 where she has operational responsibility to CO3’s Board and members for the running of the organisation. She has led on member engagement, overseeing the development of leadership development programmes and in changes in the association, including the renaming and re-branding of CO3, achieving and retaining Investor in People status, initiating the Voyager Awards for Third Sector Leadership, the CO3 Leadership Conferences, and the development of the first ever Leadership Competence Framework for third sector CEOs. Majella has a special interest in public affairs and advocacy, particularly in the third sector and has undertaken research, specialist training and projects.
